Objectives
Identify the main concepts and theories of Cultural Studies, such as ideology, hegemony, representation, and identity.

Recognize power dynamics within cultural practices and the media.

Relate globalization and digitalization to changes in cultural processes.

Apply critical tools to the analysis of cultural and media products.

Module 1: Theoretical Foundations of Cultural Studies

Definition and origins of Cultural Studies

The Birmingham School and the contributions of Stuart Hall

Culture, ideology, and hegemony (Antonio Gramsci)

Representation and the construction of meaning in the media

Module 2: Culture, Identity, and Representation

Cultural identity and multiculturalism

Gender, race, and class in culture and the media

Media narratives and cultural stereotypes

Globalization and cultural hybridization

Module 3: Culture and Consumption

The culture industry: Adorno and Horkheimer

Mass culture vs. popular culture

Participatory culture and fan practices (Henry Jenkins)

Commodification of culture and cultural capitalism

Module 4: Digital Culture and Social Media

Digital culture: memes, influencers, and online narratives

Fake news, disinformation, and filter bubbles

Algorithms and the personalization of cultural experience

Cultural journalism in the digital age

Evaluation Methodology
Assessment by Continuous Evaluation
During this period, assessment is continuous.

Final test – 40%

Individual assignment – 30%

Group assignment – 30%

Students must complete all assessment components in order to pass the course unit through continuous assessment. Failure to complete and submit both (2) assignments, or obtaining a weighted average below 10 (out of 20), results in admission to the exam period.

Assessment by Final Exam

Final exam – 60%

Continuous assessment grade – 40%

During the Special Exam Period, the rules defined for Assessment by Final Exam apply.

The final grade for the course unit results from the weighted average of the grades obtained in the components defined above.

The student passes the course unit in accordance with points 11 and 12 of Article 11 of the Academic Regulations of IPT.
