Objectives
To introduce students to the growing role of innovation and technology in contemporary humanitarian action, promoting a critical understanding of the digital, technological, and financial tools used in preparedness, response, and recovery, as well as their impacts on the effectiveness, transparency, data protection, and accountability of humanitarian operations.
Specific objectives include:
- Understanding the various types of innovations and technologies used in international humanitarian responses.
- Understanding how various digital solutions for beneficiary registration and identity work, and the ethical issues of data protection.
- Understanding the role of geographic information technologies, drones, and satellite imagery in damage preparedness, response, assessment, and monitoring.
- Understanding the role of innovation accelerators in testing new ideas and technologies.
- Developing a critical view of the digital transformation of the humanitarian sector and its impacts on efficiency, transparency and accountability.
