Objectives
By the end of this course, the student should be able to:
1) Assess the main impacts (social, economic, environmental and cultural) of tourism on heritage assets; 2) Apply diagnostic methodologies, risk assessment and analysis of tourist carrying capacity; 3) Interpret good practices of sustainable and heritage tourism, through case studies (national and international); 4) Know the legal and normative heritage protection instruments (e.g. UNESCO, ICOMOS, ICCROM, UNWTO, others) and, 5) Develop integrated management proposals that reconcile safeguarding, local development and tourist experience in their relationship with heritage interpretation and enjoyment.

1. Fundamental Concepts: heritage, tourism, impacts, safeguarding
1.1. Heritage as a cultural and tourist resource
1.2. Relationships between heritage, collective memory and territorial development
2. Main national and international organizations on public policies for safeguarding and managing heritage
3. Heritage and Tourism: Relationship and Dynamics
3.1. Commodification of culture: debates and challenges
3.1.1. National and international examples
3.2. Heritage-based tourism experiences: interpretation and mediation
4. Impacts of Tourism on Heritage: positive and negative
5. Safeguarding Heritage
5.1. Risk and threat management: natural disasters, fires, theft, vandalism, overloading
5.2. Participatory strategies and the role of local communities
5.3. Integrated management of heritage destinations
5.3.1. Analysis of destinations with degradation or overtourism problems
6. Case Studies and Best Practices

Evaluation Methodology
a) Applied Project (AP) = 80%
b) Presentation and Oral Defense of the AP (OAeDO) = 10%
c) Pedagogical Participation (PP) = 10%
d) Evaluation by Final Exam (Alternative) = 100%
