Prerequisites

Objectives
A. To develop the ability to reflect on the fundamental moments of thought and
literature in Portugal in the twentieth century and at the dawn of the twenty-first century; apprehend and deepen the
theoretical construct of literature and understand the role of literature in cultural and social construction
of identities and thought.
B. Contextualize authors and works of Portuguese literature; recognize Schools, Movements and
literary currents of contemporaneity and modernity and to perceive their framing
in Portuguese literature and society.
C. Perceive the literary work as a social document through reflective readings

Program
I. Introduction; Literature - object and nature; concepts.
1. Literature, Identity and Memory.
2. Literature as art and literature as a representation of the world.
3. Literature as a vehicle of identity and as a reformulation of memory.

II. Literature and Thought in Portugal in the Post-World War II
1. Social Realism and Neorealism. (some authors)
2. The 60s - a literature of rupture. (some authors)
5. Portuguese Cultural Thought. the Eduardo Lourenço Case

III. Modernity.
1. The cultural manifestations of Democratic/European Portugal.
2. Secular and modern literature. (some authors)
2.1.As new forms of literary representation of the world.
Reading and discussion of essays and literary works.

Evaluation Methodology
• Evaluation by frequency: (continuous and cumulative)
- Dissertation in class of a proposed theme/discussion of a literary work (20%) - minimum grade 10 points
- Two written tests with oral defense (40% each) - minimum grades 8 points.
• Evaluation by exam:
- 100% written and oral defense test - The exam will focus on the syllabus and a literary work discussed in class.
• In the Special Examination Period, the definition of the Evaluation by Exam applies.
• Student-workers: they should contact the teacher during the first two
weeks of classes to become aware of their form of evaluation.
• Erasmus students: they should contact the teacher during the first two
weeks of classes to become aware of their form of evaluation.
• In all Evaluation periods:
The student obtains approval to the UC, in accordance with the provisions of Points 11 and 12, of Article 11, of the IPT Academic Regulation.
