Prerequisites
Objectives
a) Distinguish social thought from sociological thought;
- to grasp the foundations of Sociology as a science;
- To know the influences of the emergence of Sociology;
b) To know the founding theories: proposals, concepts and cleavages;
- Acquire knowledge about Durkheimean conceptualization and Weberian conceptualization.
c) To know and debate some contemporary currents, some theories of modernity and to apprehend new paradigms of knowledge.
d) To acquire a set of conceptual frameworks that allow the reading of the social embodied in the sociological perspectives of modernity

Introduction - theories, paradigms and precursors;
THEME 1- FOUNDERS
1. Sociology and sociological method (Émile Durkheim)
1.1. Social facts and sociological method
1.2. Social solidarity; division of labor; Suicide and Social anomie
2. Sociological understanding (Max Weber)
2.1. The theory of Social Action
2.2. Social stratification - Power, domination and legitimacy
THEME 2 THEORIES of Modernity
1. Pierre Bourdieu's structuralist constructivism - "The Symbolic Power" and "The Distinction"
2. Jean Baudrillard's Sociology of Consumption
THEME 3 Culture and Identity
1. Places of Belonging - the issue of cultural identities;
2. Cultures in everyday life; social trajectories and practices;
3. Lifestyles, identities and forms of the imaginary; social and cultural change in modern societies;
4. Consumption, culture and cultural industries.
Evaluation Methodology
Avaliação por frequência (Contínua e cumulativa):
- 1ª prova - Escrita e Oral de defesa(até ao final do 1ºTema)(40%)- nota mínima na parte escrita 8
- 2ª Prova - Escrita e Oral de defesa(2º tema)(40%)- nota mínima na Parte Escrita - 8
- Discussão temática (3º Tema) (20%) nota mínima 10
N.B. - As Orais de defesa são Obrigatórias
A avaliação é feita de acordo com o disposto no Art.º 11º do Regulamento Académico das Escolas do IPT. Estão dispensados/as de Exame os/as estudantes que em avaliação por frequência obtenham nota igual ou superior a 10 valores.
Avaliação por Exame (normal e recurso):
- Prova escrita - (60%)+ Prova Oral (40%)
