Objectives
It is intended that the student seize the basic principles of the composition and structure of the atmosphere and the climatic system. The student must also acquire knowledge that allow an understanding of the fundamental physical processes of meteorology, extreme phenomena and climate.

Program
I. Earth's Context. Meteorology
1. The Atmosphere and the Climate System 1.1 What is meteorology? 1.2 The global climate system 1.3 Composition of the atmosphere and vertical structure of the atmosphere 1.4 Origin and evolution of the Earth's atmosphere
2. Clouds and Precipitation 2.1 The hydrological cycle 2.2 Saturation and condensation processes of droplets 2.3 Cloud classification. Fog. Precipitation regimes
3. The Wind 3.1 Global and average surface circulation. Air masses, fronts, depressions and anticyclones 3.2 Types of winds 3.3 Surface circulation. Breezes. 3.4 Thermal depressions.

4. Synoptic Meteorology 4.1 Measuring Instruments, Meteorological and Hydrometric Stations 4.2 Synoptic Charts
II - Climate and Extreme Phenomena
1. Introduction to Climate 2. Climate Parameters, Climate Normals and Climate Classifications 2.1 Climate Oscillations and Ice Ages 2.2 Analysis of Thermopluviometric Graphs 3. The Climate in Portugal
4. Natural Hazards 4.1 Spatial and Temporal Characterization of Precipitation, Temperature and Evaporation. 4.2 Extreme Meteorological and Climatic Events 4.3 Vulnerability Maps 5. Climate Change and Extreme Phenomena

Evaluation Methodology
Assessment:
Completion and presentation/defense of an individual research paper on a relevant topic of the subject matter. The student passes if their grade is equal to or higher than 10 out of 20 points.
